This is what is written on Apple's site (pay attention to items 2 and 3):
1) You must download and install iTunes 8.2 pre-release in order to activate iPhone OS 3.0 beta 5 on your iPhone or iPod touch.
2) iPhone SDK for iPhone 3.0 beta is for development purposes only. This software should only be installed on devices dedicated exclusively for iPhone 3.0 beta application development.
3) Devices updated to iPhone 3.0 beta can not be restored to earlier versions of iPhone OS . Devices will be able to upgrade to future beta releases and the final iPhone OS 3.0 software.
4) iPhone SDK for iPhone 3.0 can not be used for submitting iPhone OS 2.2.1 applications to the App Store.
