Guess what AT&T and Verizon? You are both guilty of providing bogus coverage maps and there is an app for that its called The People's Court of Dead Cell Zones. http://www.deadzones.com/2009/11/theres-map-for-that.html
We want to testify against both of them for being guilty of promoting bogus maps.
A VoIP based system could be ad supported and make carriers a lot more money while at the same time fixing all of the millions of cell phone dead zones. I don't think the management teams at the wireless carriers really understand the power and scale of location based advertising. They are just scared to cannibalize their money printing machines.
This is going to be a big year for Skype as the FCC opens up. 50% of homes in the US do not have seamless wireless coverage. Do a zip code search in your neighborhood for dead zones at http://deadcellzones.com
Alltel has a coverage map of dead zones here. http://deadcellzones.com/alltel.html
Taking a survey of a few thousand people is worthless when it comes to measuring coverage across the carriers. Measurement should be done on a local level and complaints compared street by street and city by city. See this inverse coverage map if you want something relevant to you as a consumer. http://www.deadcellzones.com
Very smart as I think they can actually provide better residential cell phone coverage than AT&T & Verizon and compete. A few slam dunk marketing campaigns saying do you have coverage in your home and they will win consumers. Do you think the cable operators will allow AT&T and Verizon voice traffic to travel over their lines via a femtocell?

Don't forget to tell us where your cell phone does not get service at http://www.deadcellzones.com
www.deadzones.com already does this on a national basis with user generated comments.
Let the hive mind of Engadget get that for you.
"I'm in the market for a new phone and money isn't a limitation. I'm also not partial to any particular US carrier, but here are some of the features I'd like to have: WiFi, GPS, good coverage in lots of places, push Gmail (a must!), physical keyboard (a must!), a touchscreen, decent battery life and a relatively slim body. And please, nothing that has a fruit logo on it. No offense to the fruit fans, though. Thanks!"
