Ryan,

I have not used the third party tools for too long but one of the things I know I can say so far is that Steermouse seems to be one of the better ones for it's GUI and feature capabilities. It can basically understand EVERY button on my mouse (MX Revolution) including the ability to set a search function using any key combination.

One thing I like with LCC that I am not able to do with any of the third party tools is to disable the Click to Click function of the Scroll Wheel. Granted Steermouse is powerful enough that it understands and allows for click to click when moving slowly and then unlock into free spin when going very quickly which I think is great! I just would love to have that option to turn it off and leave it in free spin mode all the time.

LCC does make customizations easier to understand and do since some of it is already preset for you but if you want anything else outside of LCC's options then you will be SOL.

Again, I have not used the third party tools too much yet to fully understand their potential/limits but as of right now Steermouse seems to be the best of the 3 options listed in this article.

Let the hive mind of Engadget get that for you.
"I just switched to Sprint from Verizon about three months ago for the Pre. Then I went for the Hero about a week ago. Now, I miss my hardware keyboard and am thinking about switching to the Moment. I am still able to switch back to Verizon if I want and get the Droid when it arrives. Should I just trade up to the Moment when it comes out, see if I like it, and if not switch to the Droid? Or something else entirely? Help!"
