MW2 wasn't a "poor job" of a port because IW was lazy. They actually implemented dedicated servers (see developer console hack), but never released shipped it because Activision wanted to milk PC users for DLC.

Most 7.1 amps have analog inputs. Some blu-ray players decode the 7.1 formats and output them via analog.

Unfortunately, the PS3 only outputs digital audio for surround, so HDMI is the only way you'll get 7.1 out of a PS3.

Product manufacturers can certainly have monopolies. And they can certainly violate anti-competitive laws that were set up to protect the consumers. Companies with majority marketshare can easily choke supply channels so that their vendors have no choice but to agree to exclusivity agreements, but this practice is illegal in America.

There are certain legal IP restrictions preventing other companies from entering the x86 arena. Thus, in order to manufacture an CPU that uses the x86 ISA requires a license from intel. AMD is the only one exempt mostly due to previous licenses and an intel-AMD court settlement in the 90s. That, and the fact that any level of R&D to make a competing product can cost billions, is a barrier for smaller companies to enter that market. Ever heard of Transmeta? Cyrix? Those companies made cheap and capable alternatives to intel chips, yet were easily crushed in the marketplace not due to simple free-market competition, but rather litigation and channel-stuffing.

I would agree that true capitalism is not possible, given that we live in an society where even simple ideas can be patented and given special exclusivity rights. But that's irrelevant to the topic.

You have to hack nvidia's drivers to support hardware PhysX if there is an ATI card in the system.

At this point, AMD/ATI will not block it since they have lower marketshare. Nvidia likely will block it, as they have majority marketshare (for discrete graphics cards at least), and have done stuff like this in the past (hardware PhysX is blocked if an ATI card is detected).

Also, keep in mind for those who buy motherboards usually have to choose between CrossFire and SLI (few motherboards support both, but it's usually one or the other). These chipset makers have to pay ATI or nvidia license fees for xfire/sli support. HYDRA may cut into that as well.

T-Mobile in Orlando is pretty crappy. My friend has a G1 and couldn't get 3G east of 417... sadly that's where I live and work (near the UCF area), so I can't justify switching. I don't know if the recent upgrades help any, but the general consensus is that best provider in Orlando is Verizon.

Unfortunately, I'm stuck on AT&T, which isn't very great down here either.
