Do you throw away your PC when a new Operating System is released? (Well, with VISTA you do, but....) Today, the hardware manufacturers are wrapping the hardware around the operating system, with deep hooks to support proprietary functionality. In the future, both the hardware manufacturers and Microsoft need to develop to a common specification. A perfect example is the camera: There is no standard function for accessing a PocketPC's camera, because each vendor's interface is proprietary. Software vendors have to react to and port their software to hardware-specific platforms, and users are left without options. If the hardware vendors step up, it would be MY CHOICE what OS I run on what device. Please help us, Microsoft.
Let the hive mind of Engadget get that for you.
"I'm looking for a solid state drive, around 32 to 64GB, for use in my web server. The drive will contain my web sites and the operating system, either Windows Server 2008 R2 or Ubuntu. Large storage is handled by a separate RAID array, so capacity is not an issue. Rather, I am looking for the fastest, longest-lasting, and most reliable drive under $150 that is suitable to my application. Any thoughts? Thanks!"
