That's just chatter we'd ordinarily dismiss as nonsense, but we couldn't help but notice most of the Dell people at the Adamo event were carrying G1s -- and Dell's director of consumer products was super-quick to pull out a Nokia E71 and gush over how well-built it was compared to other devices when we asked him where the Adamo line would be positioned. That jibes with long-standing rumors that Dell's working on Android and/or S60 devices -- rumors that Michael Dell himself refused to put to bed back in July. What does it all mean? Well, we have no idea, but we'd say that Dell's new focus on consumer-oriented design suggests that WinMo isn't really in the running if it is in fact planning a handset. We'll see how it plays out over the next few months -- we could be right, we could be wrong, but either way it should be interesting.

Dell smartphone rumors flare up -- Android or S60 phone in the works? originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Tue, 13 Jan 2009 20:23:00 EST.
It's been a pretty mad week at Mobile World Congress, with handset announcements coming faster than our sore legs, backs, and overused cameras could hope to keep up with. But in the end, it was all worth it as we peeped a few gems -- and a decent collection of crapgadget-worthy stuff as well. We were looking forward to Android news at this week's show and were rewarded with a goodly pile from various manufacturers. Standout handsets include Sony Ericsson's XPERIA X1, modu -- we think this is really cool, here's hoping they can pull it off -- NVIDIA's APX 2500, and of course, Polymer Vision's Readius. Sadly we saw just about nothing from our friends at Motorola, and while the dirt hasn't filled the grave quite yet, it's looking like a close thing. We had a blast, hope to catch you again next year.

Gallery: We're out, see you next year Mobile World Congress

Stick this one firmly in the rumor category, since all the verbiage that's been thrown around about this story still traces back to one single source: a slightly ill-informed article done up in MarketingWeek in the UK. The article cites unspecified "senior industry sources," and goes on about how this is Dell and Google working closely together on what is more or less the "Gphone." Since we have no reason to believe Google is going to jeopardize its Android OS by getting extra-friendly with one specific manufacturer, the primary weight we can give to this rumor is that fact that Dell picked up a former Motorola executive, Ron Garriques, to run its Global Consumer Group early last year. Other rumors have cropped up over the years about Dell moving in this direction, so it certainly wouldn't signal the apocalypse if a Dell-branded Android phone does show up at this rumored unveiling at 3GSM, but giving how early on Android is at the moment, we'll believe it when we see it.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Dell's building an Android phone to be unveiled next month? The major manufacturers seem to have done a brilliant job timing many of their 3GSM releases to hit the FCC this week, thus stymieing our typical scoopage. Nonetheless, if radiation reports are your thing, you've come to the right place. As you can see for yourself after the break, the combination definitely impresses, with full 3D games, seemingly high-quality video, and other multimedia capabilities on full display, not to mention a fairly snazzy and customizable interface. Somewhat ironically, NVIDIA seems to have decided to show it all off on the biggest monitor they could get their hands on. We only caught a brief early glimpse of ALP at 3GSM this year before they quickly snuck away all the gear, but PDAStreet claims that ALP has hit 1.0 in its dev cycle, and has screencaps and a lot of info we've been waiting for to make the case. First up, hardware: it should run on current generation devices, requiring at least a 200MHz ARM9 CPU (400MHz+ recommended), 64MB RAM and 64MB flash memory, and has support for input via QWERTY, 12-key with 5-way d-pad, and touchscreen (obviously) or digitizer (interesting!)with four or five hard keys. Interestingly, supported resolutions include QVGA (240 x 320), HVGA (320 x 480), and WVGA (800 x 480) -- where's the 320 x 320 Palm OS Treos have had since the 650? We dunno. ACCESS still hasn't announced any licensees, but unless ALP switches up and adds a square aspect ratio, it doesn't look like we'll see this running on any Treos as we know them today. Oh, app list after the break.

[Via Download Squad]
Continue reading ACCESS ALP hits 1.0, new specs released

ACCESS ALP hits 1.0, new specs released originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Thu, 15 Feb 2007 20:35:00 EST. It was a blast, but it's time to say goodbye to the land of El encierro, tapas, and QWERTY handsets with HSDPA. We came away with the impression that this was one of the most game-changing tradeshows for the mobile industry in recent memory; tri-band WCDMA is starting to become the rule rather than the exception, Microsoft rolled out its next-gen platform, and in general, it seemed like all the major manufacturers brought their "A" game to the party. Follow the links below for a trip down memory lane to see just what made this year's 3GSM so special.

Hands-ons, live shots
Read - We can't 100% guarantee this is for real, but Kosso over at NokLog snapped a pic at 3GSM this week of what appears to be a Samsung WiBro handset with a dedicated RSS button. Yeah, you read that right -- an RSS button. We're as crazy about this RSS stuff as you can get, but an entire button just for accessing your handset's feed reader? Then again, we are hitting the feeds these days as often as we check email, and we definitely don't mind having a phone with a dedicated email button. Anyone recognize this thing or know its model number?

[Via Scripting News and kosso's braingarden]

UPDATE: It's legit, the handset is the SPH-M8100.

Samsung WiBro handset sports RSS button? originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Thu, 15 Feb 2007 07:46:00 EST. The OMAP3430, first announced last year, is the first in TI's series of OMAP 3 processors and also first to include support for the OpenGL ES 2.0 graphics standard for 3D acceleration. The 3430 gets the muscle to move your HD files and 3D gaming from its embedded ARM Cortex-A8 processor, but from the specs it seems that the video portion is only currently supporting up to 1024 x 768 (XGA) output via composite or S-video connections. Still, with this power available, sometime in the future your common cellphone will be playing back HD on the go or outputting video to a big screen HDTV. We previously expected to see handsets based on the technology this year, but while TI is shipping samples of the processors now, don't expect your HD-capable cell to hit stores until early 2008.

Texas Instruments demos first 720p playback from a mobile phone originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Tue, 13 Feb 2007 12:39:00 EST. Apart the spiffy new moniker, however, the Windows Mobile-based device remains otherwise unchanged, with that same 5-inch VGA display, Intel PXA270 624 MHz processor, 8GB hard drive, 3 megapixel camera, Bluetooth, WiFi, and GPS, not to mention tri-band HSDPA and quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE connectivity. Of course, this isn't the first identity crisis that the device has suffered, with it already once undergoing a name change at T-Mobile's behest, who found the friendly-sounding Ameo more to their liking. In case you haven't seen enough of the device yet, you can check out another pic it sans keyboard after the break, and click through to HTC's newly-launched Advantage website for product shots aplenty, including a hypnotizing 360° view.

[Via Laptoping]
Continue reading Goodbye HTC Athena, hello HTC Advantage

Filed under: Handsets, HTC, Windows Mobile

Goodbye HTC Athena, hello HTC Advantage originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Tue, 13 Feb 2007 12:14:00 EST. We just got the chance to go mano a mano with the MOTORIZR Z8 here at 3GSM. Whether you call it a kick-slider or banana, one thing's for sure: it feels good pressed up to the face. Just check the pics to see how greasy close it's been to the legions of sweaty geek-cheeks here in Barcelona. Eww, man sweat -- but ohhh Symbian.
We had a chance to go hands-on with the Neonode N2 today while trippin' the floors of 3GSM. So how was it? Pretty sweet. Although lacking WiFi and 3G, the device felt excellent in the hand. Text input was a bit buggy but that touch-screen interface and long (theoretical) battery life will likely be a hit in whatever market the N2 ultimately reaches... someday.
As evidenced by the shot above, the OS is also looking a fair bit more polished than it was in the last few screens of it we've seen, with those in attendance at the conference also able to test out its all-important Bejewled and Solitaire capabilities (sadly, Doom doesn't seem to have been ported just yet). On the hardware side of things, both Marvell and Texas Instruments have hooked up with ACCESS to show off how their respective wares work with the OS, with both not surprisingly touting high performance and low power consumption. While that lone pic above will have to do for now, we're working to sneak in a few more peeks of the OS in action before 3GSM wraps up and we'll bring 'em to you when we've got them.

ACCESS Linux Platform on display at 3GSM originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Mon, 12 Feb 2007 21:39:00 EST. i-mate is taking a pretty interesting approach with its newest range of Windows Mobile devices -- the WM6-equipped "Ultimate" range -- by shoving a full five models out the door, all differing only in form factor. Clockwise from the upper left, we have all five in purely theoretical, rendered form: the 5150, 6150, 7150, 9150, and 8150. The strategy makes sense, really; everyone wants a solid spec sheet, but getting everyone to agree on a single shape is an exercise in futility. With 256MB of ROM, VGA displays across the board, tri-band 3G radios, Bluetooth 2.0, and FM radios, the Ultimates definitely hold their own in the spec department -- the only question, then, is whether they've nailed the industrial design. The first model being shown all public-like, the 5150 slider, is admittedly an acquired taste, but some of the others really caught our eyes (7150 and 9150, we're looking at you).

For its part, Samsung has trotted out three WiMax-ready devices, including two handsets we've seen before and a new USB dongle to bring some of that wireless broadband goodness to your laptop (or desktop, if you choose). Likely to attract the most attention is the company's SPH-P9000 "UMPC-like" device, running on Windows XP and packing a 5-inch display, 1GHz Transmeta CPU, 30GB hard drive, a foldable QWERTY keyboard and, of course, those integrated Mobile WiMax capabilities, with some good 'ol EV-DO to back it up. The also-on-display SPH-M8100 wraps that Mobile WiMax into a more traditional form factor, running on Windows Mobile 5.0 and packing a 2.8-inch display, 2 megapixel camera, and T-DMB mobile TV capabilities. Rounding out the WiMax lineup, Samsung's USB dongle is about as straightforward as you'd expect it to be, with a UICC slot to accommodate your phone's SIM card and a handy LED to let you know that it's working. Mac users are apparently out of luck with this one, however, as it's strictly Windows-only for the time being. In addition to showing off its wares, Samsung also confirmed that it's currently conducting seven Mobile WiMax trials with various partners, with more planned for later this year, though there's no indication exactly when or where.
Filed under: Handsets, Samsung, Sprint, Misc

Samsung shows off Mobile WiMAX wares at 3GSM originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Mon, 12 Feb 2007 14:02:00 EST. UK-based Omnifone is using 3GSM today as the backdrop to announce its intriguing "MusicStation" service, promising an all-you-can-eat serving of music delivered over the air to handsets for £1.99 (about $3.88) a week -- about 8 quid a month, if our math's right. According to the company itself, Omnifone's goal is to get its service onto customer's handsets ahead of the iPhone's European launch at the end of the year, and if we have a good read on how well the iPhone's going to sell, we think that's a pretty good plan on its part. The first two operators to sign up for a MusicStation launch (of an alleged 23 in total) are Scandinavian carrier Telenor and South Africa's Vodacom, with several more European launches plan over the course of the year. The music selection may not be half bad, either, with a number of independent labels signed up alongside Universal. Music can be kept as long as the user maintains service, though the downside -- as with every other all-you-can-eat download service -- is that the tunes evaporate into thin air just as soon as it's canceled. All told, not a bad alternative to the offerings we've seen from carriers Statside so far, and with 23 operators apparently on the hook, we have to believe (read: hope) one or two might be on American soil.

[Via MocoNews]

Omnifone announces MusicStation: unlimited mobile tunes, one price originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Mon, 12 Feb 2007 13:49:00 EST. We caught Samsung showing off their new Ultra Editions today at 3GSM, too; as we expected, the 12.1 (U700), 10.9 (U600), and 5.9 (U100) were there and sleek as hell. Did we mention we also got a shot of the F700 in there? Because we did. Unfortunately, it was behind a glass case. Ok, well, Samsung was smart about that, we might have made off with it if it wasn't under lock and key.
No surprises here: we got wind of an upcoming 3G MOTOKRZR K3 with 2 megapixel camera in January, and by golly that's what Motorola is delivering. Of course, the looks are pretty much in line with the original KRZR, other than some missing external media controls and, of course, the fact that this one actually does stuff. For radios, Motorola finally has the HSDPA and UMTS that should've been in here from the start, along with stereo Bluetooth, and things get extra fun with the rear-facing 2 megapixel camera and the front-facing VGA camera designed for video calls. The phone also includes 50MB of available built-in memory, a microSD slot, 2-inch QVGA display and some decent media playback and recording capabilities. Moto should be pushing this one out in Q1 2007.
Filed under: Handsets, Motorola, GSM, GPRS, EDGE, UMTS

MOTOKRZR K3 with 3G gets official originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Mon, 12 Feb 2007 13:01:00 EST. Surely you remember Samsung's Ultra Smart F700 HSDPA QWERTY, right? Well, check their latest Ultra Smart, the F520. Just how smart is it? Well, to start with, it's a dual slider offering both a full QWERTY and numeric keypad depending upon your need. Next, it packs Bluetooth, a 3 megapixel camera with flash, and a 262k color, 3-inch, 480 x 272 touch-screen display. It brings pretty much all the audio and video format support you'll need and microSD to store your goods. It features a Flash UI with document viewer and full HTML browser all bundled in a sleek 104.8 x 53.7 x 17.4-mm piece of kit. It even features dedicated hot-launch keys for TV (DMB?), Internet and Music. Alas, it's only tri-band GSM / EDGE and 2100MHz HSDPA. Still, pretty smart when it arrives around September. How you like them apples, Apple?
We had only a few brief, fleeing moments with Nokia's new powerhouse E90 mega mobile communicator, but it should come as no surprise that we liked what we saw -- a lot. Sure, it's a little mammoth, kind of like two phones sandwiched together -- but that's the price you pay for real ultimate power. Oh yeah, we saw the E61i, too -- not a whole lot going on there, we're all pretty well familiar with how that one goes, having seen and used the E61.
Toshiba's new duo may not steal the show together, but the G900 is officially ready to help redefine high-end smartphone devices. The behemoth features, as we mentioned an utterly unreal 3-inch WVGA (800 x 480) display, rear biometric scanner, 2 megapixel rear camera, front-facing video conferencing camera, 64MB of internal memory, miniSD expansion, tri-band HSDPA (yes!), 802.11b/g, Bluetooth, USB, video calling, and USB On-The-Go. The E01 is far more lower end, but still manages HSDPA, a 65k color display, A2DP Bluetooth, and that same 2 megapixel camera. We're still missing out on pricing and launch details, but for now you can still check out the gallery below for more pics, including a couple side-by-sides.

Nokia's got their E61i, and Motorola's got their Q. Not just any ol' Q though, today they've the new Q, two of them actually: the MOTO Q q9 (pictured left) and MOTO Q gsm (on right). The 11.8-mm thin q9 brings quad-band EDGE and HSDPA to this Windows Mobile 6 device for accessing all your PlaysForSure media over the air or stored in either the side-loading microSD card or 256MB of on-board memory. It also brings a USB 2.0 jack and 320 x 240 pixel display which automatically adjusts for indoor and outdoor lighting conditions. The q9 is capable of capturing video at 30fps off it's integrated 2 megapixel camera with LED light. It also brings plenty of multimedia power to the table with A2DP stereo Bluetooth audio and support for all the audio and video formats associated with the latest edition of WinMo. The MOTO Q gsm then is just what you expect: quad-band GSM and EDGE on a WinMo 6 OS. It brings a slightly different design including a thumb-wheel for navigation. The Q q9 is expected by Q2 with the quad-band Q gsm on the way in the second half of 2007.

Update: It turns out the device on the left is the q9 -- the more advanced of Motorola's GSM-radioed Qs, while the one on the right is the more pedestrian Q gsm. Makes sense to us, considering the q9's redone (sexier?) cosmetics. Our apologies for the confusion!
Either we're dreaming a lovely dream, or phone manufacturers are finally starting to embrace the concept of tri-band UMTS; for the sake of speed-loving Americans everywhere, we're hoping it's the latter. The "Aries" from ASUS will come bearing all the sweet, sweet fruits of Windows Mobile 6 Standard (that's like Smartphone, for you WM5-toting gals and gents) combined with UMTS on the 850, 1900, and 2100MHz bands for global coverage. Other features include a true scroll wheel (none of that Excalibur-style touch strip action here), 2 megapixel camera, front facing secondary cam for video calls, 520MHz XScale processor, and -- in the event you couldn't deduce it from the pictures -- a QWERTY keypad. We're told the Aries clocks in just a hair wider and thicker than the Excalibur, and if we're going to get global 3G in exchange, well, we're just fine with that. If in-the-flesh shots of phones aren't your thing, peep a decidedly more conceptual view of the Aries after the break!

Filed under: Handsets, ASUS, Windows Mobile, GSM, GPRS, EDGE, UMTS

ASUS Aries originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Mon, 12 Feb 2007 09:00:00 EST. It's not just raining N and E-series devices today in <s>Espoo</s> Barcelona. Nokia also unveiled their Nokia 6110 navigator, their second device of the day -- after the E90 -- to flaunt both GPS and HSDPA data. The S60-based 6110 combines GPS and AGPS (assisted GPS) with quad-band GSM/EDGE and UMTS 2100 for up to 3.6Mbps of hot HSDPA data. This beast brings a 2.2-inch QVGA display throwin' 16 million colors, a 2 megapixel camera with sliding lens cover and flash, and MicroSD expansion to augment the onboard 40MB. The handset touts a 3.5-hour (GSM) and 2.5-hours (3G) talk-time or up to 11 days (GSM and 3G) of standby. The 6110 is expected to ship in Q2 for an estimated pre-tax, pre-carrier-subsidy price of €450/$583. We knew the announcement was coming, now here's the product: the Neonode N2. According to Neonode's 3GSM press release, "Apple's iPhone and several other manufactures" are just "following the lead set by Neonode." Of course, they are referring to their N1 which stuttered onto the scene back in 2004. Hyperbole aside, the quad-band GSM / GPRS N2 does look pretty sweet bringing MiniSD support to store your media, a 2 megapixel camera, and a 2-inch, 176 x 220, 65k color, and of course a touch-screen display all boxed up in a small 47x77x14.7-mm / 70-gram package. We'll try to get a hands-on of a working prototype from our crew in Barcelona later today. Until then, color us skeptics... we've been burned by our Neonode enthusiasm before.
Filed under: Handsets, Others, GSM, GPRS

Neonode's N2: the iPhone is just "following" its lead originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Mon, 12 Feb 2007 08:10:00 EST. We knew they were coming and now, finally, Nokia went and blessed their quad-band GSM / UMTS / WiFi totin' E61i and E65 official. The E65 is the first slider to drop as an E-series business device. Although the styling is a bit flash for an E, this slider is designed with suits in mind so it'll integrate just fine with your corporate telephony system. The E61i (pictured) also integrates with your corporate email system -- as you'd expect from QWERTY-based E -- and adds a 2 megpapixel camera to the mix as well as an enhanced keyboard which includes new NAVI and "One Touch" keys. Both the E65 and E61i feature Nokia's new Intellisync Mobile Suite 8.0 platform which, according to Nokia, allows businesses to "achieve new levels of productivity and competitive advantage." We'll just have to wait and see about that. The E65 is already available in select markets while the E61i won't pop until Q2 -- both S60 devices will demand an unsubsidized price of about €400. You can peep the E65 after the break.
Continue reading Nokia's E61i QWERTY and E65 slider announced: some style for the suits

Filed under: Handsets, Nokia, Symbian, GSM, GPRS, EDGE, UMTS

Nokia's E61i QWERTY and E65 slider announced: some style for the suits originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Mon, 12 Feb 2007 07:20:00 EST. If Nokia's high-end N-Series multimedia <s>phones</s> computers are just a tad too beaucoup for you and yours, then check their newly launched 3G N77 handset. This N is supposed to bung right smack in the middle of mobile TV devices. Like any good Nokia it packs DVB-H mobile broadcast technology and runs S60 3rd Edition beneath that 2.4-inch, 16 million color display. It packs a 2 megapixel camera, integrated stereo speakers and standard 3.5-mm headphone jack, visual radio, and support for MP3, AAC, AAC+, eAAC+ and WMA media. This tri-band GSM / EDGE with UMTS 2100 MHz handset starts shipping in Q2 to "countries were DVB-H services are available" for a pre-tax, unsubsidized price of about €370 / $481. One more picture after the break.
Filed under: Handsets, Nokia, Symbian, GSM, GPRS, EDGE, UMTS

Nokia's N77 with DVB-H mobile TV originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Mon, 12 Feb 2007 06:40:00 EST. You saw the first photos right here on Engadget. Now, Nokia brings the official specs on their S60-series E90 Communicator. Like we heard, it brings quad-band GSM, WiFi, and HSDPA radios along with a 3.2 megapixel camera with flash (and second up front for video calls). Better yet, it does indeed pack integrated GPS and Nokia Maps for all you corporate jet-setters. Expect the E90 to hit in Q2 (volume shipments in Q3) for an unsubsidized price of between "750-800" -- they don't say but we're thinking that's euros or about $1000 of the green stuff. Damn, best put this one on the corporate account where it belongs.
Say hello again, to Motorola's 3G MOTORIZR Z8 -- the first ever "kick slider" sporting a new form factor meant to more confortably fit the profile of your face. This pup packs a Symbian (yes, Symbian) OS and up to 3.6Mbps HSDPA data in a 15.3-mm thin form factor. It delivers a 1.4 x 2-inch, QVGA 16 million color display and 2 megapixel camera around back (VGA cam up front for video calls) with the ability to record in either MPEG-4 or 3gp (for MMS). It also sports 90MB of internal memory with MiroSD expansion to store even more pictures, video, or MP3 audio; A2DP stereo Bluetooth audio; and up to 5-hours of 3G talk time or up to 16 days standby. Again, no mention of such trivialities as the frequencies supported, but the BSkyB partnership is a pretty good hint that the UK and Europe will be first in line for the Z8 when it pops in April. Motorola just busted out their new SLVR L9 handset in Barcelona. The latest SLVR ditches the laser etched keypad and brings a focus on multimedia with an integrated FM radio with RDS support, A2DP stereo Bluetooth, and support for MP3/AAC/AAC+/AAC+ enhanced/ AMR/ WAV ringtones and music. It also comes packin' a 2 megapixel camera with MPEG-4 video capture and Moto's CrystalTalk technology said to enhance conversations in noisy environments. No word on whether this is a tri-band or quad-band SLVR, only that it sports GPRS/EDGE class 10 data. It also features microSD and MegaSIM expansion and up to 400 minutes of talk time and 350 hours of standby time. Ready sometime in Q2... somewhere in the world.
What better way to kick off 3GSM than with a shotgun blast of second generation Samsung Ultra Editions. Don't worry, it won't hurt... much, these are Ultra IIs which means they're ultra slim. All the phones start with tri-band GSM, Bluetooth, and that new 3 megapixel shooter we've been expecting. The thinster of the bunch is of course the "world's thinnest" 5.9-mm U100 candybar we've already seen. Next up is 9.6-mm U300 clamshell which packs a 2.2-inch, 240 x 320 TFT internal display (98 x 16 OLED external) and 70MB of on-board storage. Bumping things up by a millimeter comes what Samsung calls the "crown jewel" of the pack, the 10.9-mm U600 slider (pictured second from the left). It ships in sapphire blue, garnet red, platinum metal and copper gold. Get it, "crown jewel!" Uh hem. The U600 comes brandishing a fourth band, a 3.1 megapixel camera, 2.2-inch 240 x 320 TFT display, Bluetooth 2.0, and 60MB of on-board storage with microSD expansion. Last up is the 12.1-mm U700 3G slider (far right) whose biggest claim to fame is 3.6Mbps HSDPA data and microSD expansion. All are expected to hit Europe before March with some hope of that quad-band U600 coming Stateside.
It looks like i-mate's SLVR-like Smartphone, the TechFaith-sourced SPL, has gone to finishing school and learned a few new tricks in the process. First up, the phone will now be offered in red, blue and pink -- all welcome additions to the slightly less-exciting gloss black launched back at CTIA last fall -- but that's only half the story. The other (arguably more interesting) half is that we're seeing shots of the phones bearing Windows Mobile 6 Standard, and while no announcement is being made at 3GSM regarding available of the re-upped OS on this particular device, we reckon it's a good sign for the future. Internally, the new colors look exactly the same as the original model -- meaning that 3G, EDGE, and GSM 850 are all no-shows -- but really, who doesn't want a bright red candybar rocking Bluetooth, a 2 megapixel cam, 128MB of Flash, 64MB of RAM, and the platform formerly known as Crossbow? Hit up the gallery for more shots of the full SPL prism!

That gold sheen just oozes tri-band HSDPA in its natural environment, does it not? This here is one of i-mate's new Ultimate devices, the 5150, packing pretty much every specification we could hope for in a Windows Mobile 6 package: quad-band GSM / EDGE plus the aforementioned tri-band UMTS / HSDPA, 802.11b / g, 256MB of onboard ROM and 128MB RAM, microSD expansion, Bluetooth 2.0, FM radio, 2 megapixel camera, and VGA (yes, we said it, VGA) display atop a 533MHz XScale core. The unusual layout and style of the navigational controls could throw users a curveball, but, uh... did we mention it does tri-band HSDPA? Check out the gallery for some more champagne-hued hotness.

By any measure, i-mate and one of its post-HTC era manufacturing partners, Inventec, had some explainin' to do after the debacle that was the JAQ; while packing Windows Mobile Pocket PC Phone Edition into a device of its form factor was pretty innovative for its time, the chubby dimensions and somewhat bizarre appearance left us wanting. Enter the JAQ4, which will become i-mate's first phone to launch with Windows Mobile 6 (Professional, no less) and makes good on the JAQ's indiscretions with a more understated look integrated into a black shell. Specs are pedestrian but workable, starting with a quad-band GSM / EDGE radio (no 3G here), 802.11b / g, 128MB ROM, 64MB RAM, Bluetooth 1.2, a camera of the 2.0 megapixel variety, and a 2.8 inch QVGA touchscreen. Follow the gallery link for some shots of the JAQ4 doing its thing, including some alongside i-mate's Ultimate 5150, which is also being announced today. Oh, and don't worry about the blasphemous presence of Windows Mobile 5 on the phone -- we've been assured that it'll be hitting with 6.

Expect the 0.55-inch thick device on Cingular, er, AT&T, this month with quad-band EDGE (blah), a QVGA display, GPS, a microSD slot, Bluetooth 2.0, scroll ball, and a relatively uncomfortable looking keyboard. Still no word on price or an exact date, but we're sure you've got a pretty decent ballpark in your head for what this thing's going to run.

P.S. -What the hell is up with the WiFi indicator on screen? It looks like HP's taking another shot at the Smartphone market -- a market it's only halfheartedly attempted to breach in the past -- with the new iPAQ 510 Voice Messenger. The candybar (which, in our humblest of opinions, bears an uncanny resemblance to the Nokia N70) will run Windows Mobile 6 Standard and top out with quadband GSM / EDGE, though the inclusion of 802.11b / g spices things up a bit on the data side and throws the possiblity of VoIP into the mix. A quick glance at the spec sheet shows a 220 x 176 display, 128MB ROM and 64MB RAM, microSD expansion, Bluetooth 1.2, and a lowly 200MHz OMAP850 to keep everything humming along without killing battery juice. See the latest iPAQ minus the glitz and glamor of the press photography in the gallery!

We came by a few "wild" shots of Samsung's i760 -- it's finally powered on and we can finally confirm it's running Windows Mobile 6 Professional. Unfortunately, it looks like they've yet to fix that godawful frontal-key layout (call and end on the sides? no Windows and ok button? are you kidding?). Judge for yourself in the photos, friends. Coming soon to a Verizon-covered neighborhood near you.

We don't have much information yet, but as you may have noticed, LG is now on Microsoft's official list for Windows Mobile licensees. We have it on authority that they've got two devices planned, one of which being a Windows Mobile take on their KE850 Prada Phone. Being that Microsoft mandates Windows Mobile devices require a certain minimum of hard buttons to operate, LG is working on a specially tweaked WM6 Pro interface to make their device actually usable without all those cluttering buttons. The other device LG's working on, as we understand, is something a little more Chocolate-like. More, of course, as we get it.
Filed under: Handsets, LG, Windows Mobile

LG has two Windows Mobile 6 devices slated, one similar to the Prada originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Sun, 11 Feb 2007 21:02:00 EST. Yeah, we know it was unofficially officially announced earlier this week, but Microsoft's release finally hit the wires about Windows Mobile getting pushed out the door (for 3GSM). It's pretty much everything we already knew about the OS, but now more info about the devices and who's getting what. But before we hit that, we also got some interesting information about additional screen resolutions: yes, WVGA (800 x 480) is now supported, as well as 320 x 320 -- you know who's been asking for that res. Now, a few more bits on where 6 is headed:

T-Mobile is indeed putting it on the Dash ("in the coming months"), still no word on the MDA

Orange's SPV E650 (HTC)

AT&T, Chunghwa, Sprint, Telefónica, and Verizon

Dopod, HP, LG (more on that in a few), Moto, Palm, Samsung, SoftBank, Toshiba, and Vodafone

Probably a lot more, too.

Apparently the biggest of all record labels, Universal, is on board (we wonder how much cash they had to bribe, er, subsidy them with) for Omnifone's sub-£10 per month service, but we've still got questions that need be answered, like: is this PlaysForSure? Can you move tracks to your PC? Can you move PC tracks to your phone? Hopefully we'll find out at 3GSM this week, so watch out.

[Thanks, John]

Omnifone to be the first with 3G subscription music downloads? originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Sun, 11 Feb 2007 14:44:00 EST.
