The <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/05/31/phoenix-project-webos/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Open webOS</a> project announced today in its blog that the fledgling OS won't support any of the existing hardware -- like HP's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/09/24/pre-3-for-atandt-review/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Pre 3</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/29/hp-touchpad-review/?utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_source=pulsenews?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">TouchPad</a>. While not completely surprising, this is disappointing for those who were hoping to wring a little more life out of their current webOS devices. Open webOS is targeting SoCs that support the Linux 3.3+ kernel and components with open source drivers. The blog post blames the existing hardware's "many proprietary components, including graphics, networking and lack of drivers for a modern kernel". Despite having access to these proprietary drivers, it appears HP isn't willing to make them available to the Open webOS project -- proof that sometimes you can have your cake, but not eat it too.</p>

While we will never see the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/09/24/pre-3-for-atandt-review/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Pre 3</a> adorning the AT&amp;T shelves of phone stores, the FCC at least had the courtesy to investigate HP's final webOS device in detail, though we doubt they were able to conclude the precise <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/18/editorial-engadget-on-hps-denial-of-webos-operations/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">cause of death</a>. The full <em>devastating</em> teardown reveals some Sandisk flash storage, and a tightly packed interior. There's another interesting detail found in those external images, too. As a previous <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/06/hps-keyboard-less-webos-phone-and-verizon-pre-3-leaked/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">leak</a> had suggested, this model was destined for the Big Red, with a not-so enigmatic Verizon logo etched into the metallic slide-out backing. The full internal rundown is in the gallery below. Tissues are in that box to your right. <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hp-pre-3-teardown/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">HP Pre 3 FCC teardown</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hp-pre-3-teardown/4584356?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/11/hgallery307mat800_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hp-pre-3-teardown/4584365?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/11/premat2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hp-pre-3-teardown/4584363?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/11/2premat7_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hp-pre-3-teardown/4584364?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/11/premat1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hp-pre-3-teardown/4584355?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/11/10premat7_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div>

Anyone who caught the series premiere of <em>Grimm</em>, NBC's new fairy-tale-and-crime-procedural would have seen another sort of unearthly fusion: a Palm Pre device ringing like an iPhone. The phone then switches to the typical webOS interface we've long <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/09/24/pre-3-for-atandt-review/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">admired</a>, picking up reception on AT&amp;T along the way. We're torn over whether they're using a Pre 2 or another Palm family member, though the screen looks too dinky for it to be the mythical Pre 3. But in a world of monster hunters and big bad wolves, we guess anything's possible.<br />
<br />
[Thanks, Ben]

Following <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/28/the-guardian-hp-shutdown-of-webos-division-said-to-be-imminent/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">a report</a> from <em>The Guardian</em>, saying the company would in fact kill the webOS division, Bradley referred to the report as an "unfounded rumor." He went on to say that "accolades for the operating system are broadly known" and that the company is focusing on how to "effectively utilize that phenomenal software." Of course, there's always a chance that the best way to utilize the troubled OS is to sell it to the highest bidder, but Bradley said HP will weigh all the "data and information" before making "the right decision." For now, the operating system's still kicking it in limbo. The full interview awaits you at the source link below.

While nothing is yet confirmed, <em>The Guardian</em> is now reporting that HP will indeed finally shut down its webOS division, which could affect up to 500 jobs (either through reassignment or layoffs -- we've previously heard that some layoffs had <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/09/20/layoffs-underway-at-hps-webos-division-hundreds-of-employees-m/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">already begun</a>). That word comes from some unnamed internal HP sources, who reportedly expect an "imminent closure," with one employee adding that "there's a 95% chance we all get laid off between now and November." For its part, HP remained noticeably mum on any news about webOS when it <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/27/hp-will-keep-pc-division-hope-alive/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">announced</a> that it would hang onto its PC business this week, and its decision to use Windows 8 on tablets certainly didn't do much to inspire the webOS faithful.

Man, what a weird, labyrinthine life <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/09/20/hands-on-with-hps-unreleased-white-touchpad-and-pre-3-for-atandt/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">this device</a> has had. European carriers didn't even want the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/11/12/uk-carriers-say-thanks-but-no-thanks-to-the-palm-pre-2/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Pre 2</a>, and for whatever reason, those folks were the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/17/hp-pre-3-now-available-for-purchase-on-official-european-store/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">only ones</a> to even <i>get</i> the Pre 3. Excluding this guy, of course. <em>This</em> guy, as you've probably gleaned, is one of only a handful of AT&amp;T Pre 3 handsets to make it out of the factory unscathed, and we couldn't be happier to be putting it through the paces. Well... we <em>could</em> be happier, but that would require Meg Whitman undoing Leo's departing shot through the webOS heart.<br />
<br />
All that aside, it's been a strange few days with the final webOS-based phone, and in a sense, the final phone that'll ever have Palm's DNA running through its circuitry. Not even two months ago, HP was <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/07/29/hp-tells-developers-to-start-submitting-apps-for-pre-3-still-on/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">telling</a> developers to get their Pre 3 app submissions in for approval, and a mere four weeks ago, the same company affirmed that this very phone <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/22/hp-pre-3-not-destined-for-us-shores/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">wouldn't ever arrive</a> on US shores. You know, despite that whole "<a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/09/the-hp-pre-3/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">being announced for AT&amp;T</a>" thing. Turns out, a few of those units actually did pass the requisite QA tests, and if you've got the right connections (or a quick enough trigger finger on eBay), you too can land yourself what'll undoubtedly go down as one of the most highly sought after pieces of Palm / webOS history. But should you? Find out after the break. <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/palm-pre-3-for-atandt-hands-on-and-unboxing-0/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Palm Pre 3 for AT&amp;T hands-on and unboxing</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/palm-pre-3-for-atandt-hands-on-and-unboxing-0/4475576?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/09/palm-hp-pre-3-att-hands-on0813-1316806699_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/palm-pre-3-for-atandt-hands-on-and-unboxing-0/4475575?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/09/palm-hp-pre-3-att-hands-on0814-1316806699_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/palm-pre-3-for-atandt-hands-on-and-unboxing-0/4475574?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/09/palm-hp-pre-3-att-hands-on0815-1316806698_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/palm-pre-3-for-atandt-hands-on-and-unboxing-0/4475573?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/09/palm-hp-pre-3-att-hands-on0816-1316806698_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/palm-pre-3-for-atandt-hands-on-and-unboxing-0/4475572?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/09/palm-hp-pre-3-att-hands-on0817-1316806697_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div>

Well, we knew it <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/19/hp-touchpad-rumored-to-lack-document-editing-at-launch/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">was coming</a>, and folks, it's finally here -- the promised update to <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/quickoffice/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Quickoffice HD</a> that brings document editing to HP's webOS slate. Available gratis for TouchPad owners, the overhaul enables text formatting in Word docs, in addition to enabling cell and function editing in Excel spreadsheets. Unfortunately, editing of Powerpoint presentations is sorely lacking, but that's nothing another update can't cure, right?

Looks like all of those currently enjoying HP's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/21/poll-if-you-snagged-a-touchpad-on-closeout-what-are-you-using/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">deep discounts</a> on the TouchPad won't be reaping similar benefits with regards to the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Pre3/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Pre 3</a> -- not in the US, at least. HP broke the news to <em>PCMag</em>, explaining that the smartphone won't be hitting the States. European webOS fans will be getting a pretty sweet deal from all of this, however, with the handset running a rather affordable $75 unlocked in France and the UK. And what about Germany? HP is reporting that the Pre 3 has sold out in that country.

<em>Each week <a href="http://twitter.com/rossrubin">Ross Rubin</a> contributes <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/switchedon?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Switched On</a>, a column about consumer technology.</em><br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
	<a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/21/switched-on-the-webos-triangle/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/08/hp-webos-products.jpg" style="border-width: 0px; border-style: solid; margin: 4px;" /></a></div>
HP's decision to <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/18/editorial-engadget-on-hps-denial-of-webos-operations/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">discontinue</a> production of webOS devices has been widely seen as the final nail in the promising operating system's coffin. Statements from HP on the future of webOS app development sound absurd in the current context. How can, for example, HP continue to promote the webOS app catalog as it has pledged to do when there are no ongoing devices on which those apps can run? How would developers even test apps?<br />
<br />
The answer may lie in a complex ongoing reorientation of the webOS triangle consisting of the HP corporate entity, PSG (Personal Systems Group, HP's PC business) and webOS. HP hasn't said exactly what it is doing with webOS. However, the combination of publicly expressing commitment to the operating system while dismantling its own devices points strongly to licensing. In fact, it's highly consistent with it; if HP simply wanted to wage war with (or sell) Palm's patent pool, it wouldn't need webOS developers any more. HP made no secret of its interest in licensing webOS while it was still producing devices based on that operating system. As <em>Switched On</em> <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/07/03/switched-on-webos-wherever/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">discussed last month</a>, though, there is a long, bleak history chronicling the difficulty in building devices based on an OS that a company is licensing. In other words, pursuing both of the contrasting business models of Apple and Microsoft results in inherent conflict.

	<a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/18/hp-will-discontinue-operations-for-webos-devices/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/08/8-18-2011hp-logo-cmyk-1313695415.jpg" style="border-width: 0px; border-style: solid; margin: 4px;" /></a></div>
And just like that, Palm's baby was abandoned. Among the "other announcements" in today's press release about the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/18/hp-may-spin-off-pc-business-shift-focus-to-software-and-services/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">potential spinoff</a> of its entire Personal Systems group (PCs, mobile devices, storage) is a note that the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/webOS/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">webOS</a> ecosystem <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/07/01/hp-palm-buyout-officially-complete-get-ready-for-webos-prin/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">HP snagged for $1.2 billion a year ago</a> is already being ditched.<br />
<blockquote>
	<p>
		<em>"In addition, HP reported that it plans to announce that it will discontinue operations for webOS devices, specifically the TouchPad and webOS phones. HP will continue to explore options to optimize the value of webOS software going forward.</em>"</p>
</blockquote>
Among slightly lowered estimates for its 2011 revenue, HP confirms it's in talks with Autonomy Corporation plc about a "possible offer" for the company. It's clear that a separation of HP the services / software company and HP the hardware manufacturer leaves no room in the lifeboat for the Pre and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/touchpad?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">TouchPad</a> family, but what happens next? We're sure there will be more pointed questions about what "optimizing the value of webOS software going forward" means -- we vote for a quickie sale to one of Google's disgruntled hardware partners or better yet, opening it up for some community hackery -- on the conference call scheduled for 5 p.m. Eastern.<br />
<br />
<strong>Update:</strong> HP CEO Leo Apotheker confirmed on the company's earnings call late this afternoon that the Autonomy acquisition is considerably further along than just a "possible offer," and that it's expected to be completed by the end of 2011. He also made it clear that any possible spin-off of the PC business won't happen soon, and said that the company will take 12 to 18 months to consider its options, further adding that he is "taking ownership" of all of these decisions. As for webOS, Apotheker expectedly offered few specifics, but suggested that just about all options, including licensing, remain on the table.<br />

<div>
	If you haven't been paying close enough attention to the matter, you'd think the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/09/palm-pre-2-vs-hp-pre-3-whats-changed/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">HP Pre 3</a> had already been released. After all, it's been myriad months since it <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/09/the-hp-pre-3/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">was originally announced</a> and the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/13/hp-veer-4g-review/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Veer</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/29/hp-touchpad-review/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">TouchPad</a> were both pushed out to store shelves (arguably a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/10/hp-touchpad-price-drop-goes-permanent/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">little <em>too </em>early</a>). Sadly, it's still sitting on deck, waiting to try its luck when the time is right. Orange's UK branch, however, is wasting no time making sure it's ready for the mystery launch date, as the Pre 3's support page is live on the carrier's site and awaiting your perusing eyes. The listed specs confirm that the smartphone's running with a 1.2GHz dual-core CPU (as opposed to its <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/09/the-hp-pre-3/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">originally-announced 1.4GHz</a>) and using <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/webos%202.2/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">webOS 2.2</a>, as well as 512MB of RAM and a 3.6-inch 800 x 480 WVGA resolution display. Though we're still waiting on word of the phone's release from HP or Orange, sightings of a finalized page on the carrier's site are awfully hard to ignore. Given the length of time it's taken to hit the market, however, will it even feel fresh once daylight hits it for the first time?</div>

Hey, wouldn't it be great if you could sync your music collection across your HDD and all your mobile devices? <em>Ahem, </em>we know what you're thinking. Nevertheless, HP clearly feels the need to play a little catch-up. It's starting yet <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/07/07/facebook-vibes-outed-in-video-calling-code-related-music-servic/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">another</a> <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/07/06/amazon-cloud-player-hits-ipad-adds-unlimited-storage-scoffs-at/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">connected</a> <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/15/sony-music-unlimited-hits-android-hopes-you-dont-know-why-qri/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">music</a> <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/06/apple-announces-itunes-in-the-cloud/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">service</a>, called HP Play, to cater specifically for owners of the TouchPad, Veer, and potentially other webOS devices like the Pre 3. The beta has just launched and by all measures it's an extremely basic affair -- like, iTunes 2001 basic: no OTA syncing, no cloud storage and no store. But this <em>is</em> just a beta, and if it ties into the HP music service that was <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/13/hp-reportedly-in-talks-with-major-labels-over-cloud-based-servic/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">rumored a few weeks ago</a> then it could be the start of something more in keeping with air conditioning, clean drinking water and other modern expectations.

<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
	<a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/07/10/switched-on-wanting-webos/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/07/hp-touchpad-webos.jpg" style="border-style: solid; border-width: 0px; margin: 4px;" /></a></div>
The <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/07/03/switched-on-webos-wherever/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">last Switched On</a> discussed why HP could have more success licensing webOS than Palm or PalmSource ever did with Palm OS. To put it in the context of a more modern conflict, HP's handsets could be the equivalent of a Google Nexus devices (but selling better in HP's ideal), competing with phones from other Android stakeholders. Even the Nexus phones, however, are ultimately produced by existing licensees such as HTC and Samsung.<br />
<br />
WebOS as a licensed operating system would likely compete most directly with Windows Phone 7, an OS that offers licensees and consumers some choice but preserves a consistent user experience -- particularly as it is trying to court developers. Unlike Windows Phone 7, though, webOS is rapidly being expanded to new form factors, with the TouchPad serving as the first tangible proof.<br />
<br />
HP has said that it's most interested <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/01/hps-leo-apotheker-totally-open-to-licensing-webos-to-other-hand/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">licensing</a> to companies that wouldn't compete with it in its core markets. For now, let's count out HP's major PC competitors Acer, Dell (which once may have tried to build its own webOS-like platform when it acquired Zing), Lenovo and Toshiba. However, many companies that could help develop meaningful (in terms of absolute volume but also as a relevant development platform) scale for webOS in at least the US market offer, at minimum, handsets. A handset licensee could imbue webOS phones with features such as a 4.3-inch display that HP has shied away from, but which has been present in many successful smartphones.

Go grab the Morton -- you're gonna need a grain or two. According to a "confidential HP product brief" sent anonymously to <em>PreCentral</em>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/HP/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">HP</a> is on track to launch a new 64GB <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/TouchPad/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">TouchPad</a> next month, complete with a white glossy cabinet and a "processor bump," along with support for AT&amp;T's HSPA+ network. The company just started shipping its 16GB and 32GB TouchPads, but even August wouldn't be too soon for a speed boost, considering the tablet's disappointing performance <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/29/hp-touchpad-review/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">during our review</a>. The presentation also lists the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Pre3/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Pre 3</a> for a "fall" launch, along with that mysterious <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/19/hp-palm-tablet-to-feature-touchstone-dock-cloud-storage-beat/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Opal tablet</a>. Despite the so-called leaked confidential presentation, this rumor should be approached like any other -- but on the other hand, with the Pre 3 making recent appearances at the FCC in both <a href="http://mobile.engadget.com/2011/04/26/hps-pre-3-gets-an-emissions-test-at-the-fcc-likely-destined-fo/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">AT&amp;T</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/10/another-pre-3-at-the-fcc-coming-to-verizon-for-you-and-me/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Verizon</a> flavors, HP's latest webOS smartphone could easily be on-track to hit stores by autumn.

This week's release of the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/29/hp-touchpad-review/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">HP TouchPad</a>, the first device other than a handset to feature webOS, aptly demonstrates the promise and perils of HP's adopted operating system. The 4:3 tablet provides the large canvas that webOS seemed born to cover. However, like the Xoom and PlayBook before it, the TouchPad suffers from an impoverished app library among other holes. To help share development costs of webOS and expand the market for its developers, HP has warmed to the idea of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/01/hps-leo-apotheker-totally-open-to-licensing-webos-to-other-hand/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">licensing</a> the Palm-developed operating system.<br />
<br />
HP's willingness to license webOS while continuing to make devices based on the operating system serves up a healthy helping of d&eacute;j&agrave; vu for those who followed the history of Palm, Inc. The PDA pioneer sought to take advantage of its dominance in handhelds, and stave off rival Pocket PCs powered by Windows CE, by licensing the Palm operating system while continuing to use it.<br />
<br />
The decision proved to be Palm's short-term salvation and long-term ruin. One of the first companies to license the Palm OS was Handspring, <a href="http://mobile.engadget.com/2007/12/19/palm-ceo-ed-colligan-says-were-working-on-it-promises-break/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">founded</a> by former Palm executives. Handspring created the Treo, which became Palm's entry into smartphones when Palm acquired Handspring. A few other companies licensed the Palm OS for smartphones, including Kyocera and Samsung, but the inherent conflict created by competing with licensees forced Palm to spin Palm OS out into a company called <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2004/12/08/hugeness-palmsource-planning-linux-powered-version-of-palm-os/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">PalmSource</a>, which <a href="http://mobile.engadget.com/2006/10/13/palmsource-rip-2003-2006/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">folded</a> three years later.

As things get older they tend to get bigger. It's the same for people, corporations, models of cars, budget deficits... and so it is for webOS. As Palm was in the process of being subsumed its great mobile operating system was being eyed for much broader things, far bigger than the little phones it had previously been flashed on. Things like <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/27/hps-bradley-says-company-is-not-trying-to-be-apple-will-sell-1/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">printers</a> and <a href="http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&amp;source=web&amp;cd=1&amp;ved=0CBoQFjAA&amp;url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.engadget.com?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget%2F2011%2F03%2F14%2Fhp-touchpad-coming-june-webos-for-pc-beta-by-years-end%2F&amp;ei=FGQLTvnwEMf20gHT0qCOAQ&amp;usg=AFQjCNF5_OxbV0myEEvvvim9ouZddDqLmA&amp;sig2=pkRFXV-Fx3rehTWaLW0DQQ">desktops</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/09/webos-will-on-every-hp-pc-shipping-next-year-says-ceo/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">laptops</a>, but for its first proper foray outside of a phone it has a tall task: compete in the brutally vicious tablet space.<br />
<br />
Its weapon is the TouchPad, a 9.7-inch tablet from HP that got official back in February and will be available July 1st (if you don't manage to <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/27/hp-touchpad-veers-into-stores-early-flaunts-its-webos-moves-vi/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">find it earlier</a>) -- $499.99 for the 16GB model, $599.99 for 32GB. That's exactly on parity with the WiFi iPad 2 and Galaxy Tab 10.1, current kings of the tablet court. Does this plus-sized Palm progeny really have what it takes to hang at that price point, or is this just a chubby pretender that's outgrown its britches? Read on to find out.<br />

HP's mystery-wrapped <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/09/hp-touchstone-tech-now-lets-you-tap-two-devices-together-to-swap/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Touch-to-share</a> functionality already does something very similar to <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/10/engadget-primed-what-is-nfc-and-why-do-we-care/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Near Field Communication</a>, but it looks like the company's not satisfied with its own tech and will be jumping into the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/16/sony-ericsson-signs-deal-with-nfc-chip-maker-gets-ready-to-do-t/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">rapidly growing</a> field of companies <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/26/google-wallet-mobile-payment-service-google-offers-announced/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">embracing NFC</a>. A new job listing that has popped up online this week invites applications for the position of NFC Design Engineer on HP's tablet and smartphone team. Responsibilities include the design, testing, and debugging of NFC antennae and systems, but also expand to "support of product in field," indicating that HP is working on an aggressive roadmap here. Don't take our word for it, though, the job advert also advises prospective applicants that they'd have to work in a "high paced, schedule driven environment." Only question we have is this: since when are webOS devices being produced at a high pace?

The FCC has seen a decent share of WebOS devices this year, having first tested the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/12/hp-veer-shows-its-cute-little-face-in-fcc/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Veer</a> in February, and most recently HP's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/26/hp-touchpad-hits-the-fcc/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Touchpad</a> (which we reported earlier today). Now, it appears the regulator is examining the forthcoming Pre 3, and while none of the documents specifically name the device, based on the size and proportion of the label, we think it'll pair nicely with a certain <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/09/the-hp-pre-3/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">3.6-inch display</a>. We've also noted the diagram mentions a battery compartment, suggesting it's not the Veer, which is rumored to have a sealed battery. Whatever the device may be, it's packing WebOS 2.3 -- and judging from the 1900 / 850MHz 3G bands, it seems destined for AT&amp;T, Rogers, Bell, or Telus in North America. Follow the break for a peek at the FCC label.

Living within the screwy reality of the subsidized phone world sometimes results in rather comical distortions. Take for example the Palm <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Pre2/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Pre 2</a>, now tossed into the freebie bin -- along with a whole slew of its best accessories -- at HP's own Wireless Central. Announced just two months ago, HP's storefront would have you believe its slider is worth $699 with no strings attached -- or wait, what? As we do a mental reboot, let's consider the following: this lovable 1GHz QWERTY handset, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/15/pre-2-available-for-150-through-verizon-on-february-17/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">still $149 through Verizon</a>, is now free for the taking from HP with your two-year commitment to Big Red. We sense many may hesitate before taking the plunge, as the Palm-branded option felt like a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/09/hp-pre-3-first-hands-on/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">stopgap</a> solution even on launch; still, the Touchstone's second mate can toss around <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/10/19/webos-2-0-review/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">webOS</a> with ease, and if you prefer the smaller form factor, this is as good as it gets (for now).

<a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/27/upgrading-old-pres-pre-pluses-to-webos-2-1-slightly-easier-fra/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img vspace="16" hspace="4" border="1" align="right" alt="" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/02/pre-review-sm.jpg" /></a>Let's be honest, Palm user: in all likelihood, your days with your <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Pre/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Pre</a> or <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/PrePlus/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Pre Plus</a> are numbered. At this point, you've got the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Pre2/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Pre 2</a> available, the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Pre3/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Pre 3</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Veer/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Veer</a> in the pipeline, and countless awesome assaults from other platforms in constant danger of stealing you away. Might as well have a little fun, right? Maybe try your hand at an unauthorized upgrade to webOS 2.1, for example? WebOS Internals has thrown together some scripts that make updating a variety of Pre and Pre Plus versions from Sprint, Verizon, AT&amp;T, Telcel, and Bell -- devices that HP <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/09/original-pre-pre-plus-pixi-and-pixi-plus-wont-get-updated-to/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">recently decided wouldn't get webOS 2.0</a> -- relatively painless, though they're quick to note that any number of absolutely awful things could still happen to your device or your Palm Profile. It's not for the faint of heart... but then again, carrying around a Pre these days shows a level of platform defiance that isn't for the faint of heart, either, so you're no stranger to bravery.<br />
