Starting next month, US Cellular -- in partnership with Alltel Wireless -- will begin rolling out a new contract-free package dubbed "U Prepaid," which, naturally, is set to be backed by both of the aforementioned carrier's networks. The fresh U Prepaid deal will be making its way into "nearly" 500 Walmart stores across 18 US states, though there's no mention of which ones specifically. That being said, US Cellular and Alltel did announce the four devices coming at launch, including Samsung's Repp and Chrone along with the LG Attune / Exchange and Saber. In any case, now you know where to go if those recently announced plans from AT&T and Verizon aren't keeping a smile on your face.

Continue reading US Cellular, Alltel Wireless team up to launch 'U Prepaid' service in Walmart stores

US Cellular, Alltel Wireless team up to launch 'U Prepaid' service in Walmart stores originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 30 Apr 2012 20:32:00 EST. We just received official word from a Verizon spokesperson that effective today, the carrier will no longer allow you to bring over an Alltel device to a retail outlet and get it activated on their network. If you're currently using an Alltel-branded phone on Verizon, don't panic: this new policy change only applies to handsets that haven't already been activated. We can't imagine this will affect too many users at this point, but we imagine Chad's still feeling a little bummed out today regardless. For all you free-wheelers who prefer talking without commitment, iMobileMinutes is giving you one less excuse to go running to the gas station when it's time to top up your cellular account -- thanks to a free set of carrier-specific apps in the Android Market that perform the same function with considerably less effort. Now, you can purchase minutes directly (or get the necessary PIN), in the denomination of your choice, all from the comfort of your Google-powered smartphone. If this sounds appealing, there's support for Alltel, AT&T, Cricket, H2O, Simple Mobile, T-Mobile, and Verizon Wireless, along with Airlink, Airvoice and Net 10. It's certainly a nifty alternative, but if you're not ready to cut ties with your favorite 7-Eleven clerk just yet, there's always Slurpees. Just don't blame us for the brain freeze, okay?
iMobileMinutes for Android refills your prepaid's empty tank originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 05 Jul 2011 17:53:00 EST. The elusive HTC Merge has been on our radar since last fall, and while it's been officially announced, played with, and FCC approved, carrier availability has been all but a mystery -- until now that is. Alltel is presently taking pre-orders for the Merge with a price of $125 on contract (after $50 mail-in rebate) and a ship date of April 5th. Meanwhile, Cellular South is launching the Merge "next month" for an undisclosed price, but will offer the handset pre-loaded with the Amazon Appstore for Android -- a world first. Strangely, there's still no indication when (or even if) the device will emerge on Verizon. Just a quick recap: the Merge is a global smartphone (dual-mode CDMA / GSM) with a slide-out keyboard, 3.8-inch touchscreen, and 5 megapixel autofocus camera, running Android 2.2 with Sense UI. Hit the source link below for Alltel's pre-order page, and jump past the break for Cellular South's press release.
If you're in the magnificent boondocks of North America and you're on Sprint, you're going to have to start to be a little more careful with your voice and data usage -- in fact, if you live in parts of North Dakota, Wyoming, or Montana, you might be forced to consider a carrier change on news that some swaths of on-network footprint are changing to roaming coverage on March 1st. The move is said to be a result of Verizon's divestiture of certain ex-Alltel markets to AT&T, and it means that if you're on Sprint and you use more than 800 voice minutes (or half your plan) in the new roaming areas in a month, the carrier's liable to suspend you; similarly, you won't be able to exceed 300MB of data. Certain device and plan features don't work in roaming areas, either -- Sprint details them on its FAQ page about the change -- so if you live in those parts, you might need to look at moving to greener pastures.
We know it's tough for the little guys to get great handsets without a top-tier carrier's exclusivity agreement getting in the way, but goodness -- launching an Android 2.1 device in early 2011 for nearly $100 on contract seems odd, doesn't it? That said, the few wireless markets that remain under the Alltel brand (they're down to around 800,000 customers in six states now) are nabbing a device called the Axis this week, featuring a 3.2 megapixel camera along with a 3.2-inch WVGA display -- specs that put it roughly in line with the Ally found on Verizon. Want it? It should be available to you now for $89.99 after a $50 mail-in rebate on a two-year contract; follow the break for the full press release.
Continue reading LG Axis comes to Alltel... with Android 2.1

LG Axis comes to Alltel... with Android 2.1 originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 14 Jan 2011 17:08:00 EST. Yes, Verizon got the lion's share of Alltel's peeps post-merger, but AT&T is reaching out to the handful of customers it scored as a result of Verizon's divestitures and offering them deals on handsets in an effort to get them switched over to GSM in a smooth, timely fashion. Though owners of different Alltel phones are getting mailings offering different replacement devices (a Tritan owner is getting dumbphone promos and a Hero owner is getting what you see above, for instance), it would appear all upgrade deals apply to all customers making the transition, regardless of device. By and large, the upgrade offers aren't better than the best upgrade offers for regular AT&T customers, though there are a couple standouts -- you can get an Aria for free or a Torch for $100, for instance -- so the best benefit would seem to be that customers making the switch can cancel out entirely without an ETF for the first 30 days. The carrier isn't forcing customers to make the switch just yet -- nor will they offer a date when that's going to happen -- so it seems like this is just gentle encouragement at this point.
HTC didn't bother to announce this when it said the Wildfire would be coming to some regional American carriers in the fourth quarter, but it turns out Alltel -- the tiny bits left of it in the wake of the Verizon acquisition, that is -- is one of those carriers, and Android Central put aside a little time to check it out. Build quality is said to be reasonable (as you'd expect from an HTC device) albeit a bit on the plasticky side, the camera's decent, and the load of Android 2.1 is refreshingly close to stock -- but the deal-breaker is that ridiculously low-res QVGA display, something we took issue with in our look at the GSM Wildfire earlier this year as well (this CDMA version is the phone rumored as the Bee, by the way). All told, not bad for $30... but when you consider that the HVGA LG Optimus T is hitting T-Mobile for the same price, HTC might have to do better than this in the low-end war.
It took a good, long while, but AT&T has finally closed on its acquisition of the markets Verizon was required to divest in order to get the government to agree to its purchase of Alltel early last year. For most customers, the move has no practical impact -- the markets are mostly rural -- but for affected folks, it means that they'll be able to "select a device comparable to their existing device at no additional cost" as markets get upgraded over the course of the next 12 months. Interestingly, all of the markets will be getting the 3G treatment, a sharp departure from AT&T's typical strategy of keeping unpopulated areas on EDGE -- but it probably makes sense to get them up and running on 3G since the network's got to be built up from scratch anyhow. Follow the break for the full press release.
Continue reading AT&T seals deal on Verizon's divested Alltel markets

AT&T seals deal on Verizon's divested Alltel markets originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 23 Jun 2010 03:47:00 EST. Surfing Facebook for Kin info? That's so last year. The cool kids are members of the "upload generation" -- meaning they wait at gdgt for Microsoft employees to upload the specs. This week, social marketing director John Starkweather did just that, and now we know that both Kin One and Kin Two will sport a 600MHz processor and EV-DO Rev. A when they come to market in May, as well as light and proximity sensors. Bluetooth remote and headset profiles are to be had alongside Microsoft Exchange, and there's support for H.264, MPEG-4 and WMV video files. Last and assuredly least, the phones aren't technically Verizon-exclusive in the US; the last remaining customers of Alltel will also get their chance to show off tragic, angst-filled lives.
Microsoft Kin specs update: 600MHz processors, ambient sensors originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 22 Apr 2010 20:30:00 EST.
Alltel's also gotten on the BlackBerry Curve 8530 bandwagon, but unlike Sprint, Verizon, and Telus, the contract is shorter and the price is oh so much sweeter. The regional carrier's (well, more like micro carrier ever since Verizon swallowed most of it) version of the phone rings in at $499, but after $360 online discount and $100 mail-in rebate, you're only going to have to plonk down $39.99 -- with a qualifying plan, of course. And hey, the best part about it is being able to hate on all your T-Mobile-toting friends who are stuck with 2G on the 8520, right?

Continue reading Alltel launches BlackBerry Curve 8530

Alltel launches BlackBerry Curve 8530 originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 21 Jan 2010 12:04:00 EST. Most Americans likely won't ever get a crack at Samsung's latest low-end portrait QWERTY design, despite the fact that Virgin Mobile Canada's managed to snag it as the Link. Notice we said "most," because Alltel -- what little remains of it outside Verizon's clutches -- has picked it up as the "Freeform." The phone makes do with a 220 x 176 landscape display clocking in at 2.2 inches, a 1.3 megapixel camera (curiously forgotten from both the spec sheet and the press release), stereo Bluetooth support to accompany the microSD slot, GPS, and availability in both teal and burgundy -- both bolder choices than the deep gray offered up north. It runs $69.99 on a one-year contract (remember that those guys recently dropped the two-year deal), which is a little more than $20 less than what Virgin Mobile Canada's charging on prepaid.
Filed under: Handsets, Samsung, Alltel, CDMA

Alltel picks up the Samsung Freeform, looks pretty well-defined to us originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 15 Sep 2009 01:34:00 EST. Alltel customers -- totally legit ones who've been left out of the Verizon integration -- have a few things going for them, not the least of which is a one-year contract policy that applies across the lineup. That means you can get a Tour for the same two bills you'd pay on Sprint or Verizon but with only half the time commitment, but now, it also means you can get an HTC Snap (generic version pictured above) for just $80. Considering it's the same form factor with international roaming capability that the Tour offers, that might be $120 worth saving if you're not married to BlackBerry OS and you're willing to give WinMo a fair shake. That's not so crazy of an idea, is it?
That shot of an Alltel-branded Tour in the wild turned out to be stone-cold legit seeing how the regional carrier (what's left of it following the Verizon acquisition, anyhow) is now offering the phone for $200 -- the same price you'll find on Sprint or Verizon. That's cool and all, but we know the real reason you're reading this is that they've also launched the Samsung Glint, a low-cost flip with a VGA cam, stereo Bluetooth, and availability in both pink and blue. Both devices are available now, though we've yet to see 'em show up on the carrier's site so you might want to make some phone calls before running down to the store.
We've been asked not to reveal the URLs, but we can assure you we've seen this official support screen pictured above with our own two eyes, which means that the HTC Hero is all but confirmed in a juicy CDMA blend for Sprint. How (or if) that'll affect the availability of the US 3G version unlocked or on any carrier is unclear, but given Hesse's huffy language regarding Pre exclusivity, we wouldn't be surprised if they've got this one locked down for a while as well. We've seen a similar support page for an Alltel-branded Snap, so if you're still tied up in one of the carrier's legacy divested markets and you've been pining after the Snap (and Ozone) on Sprint and Verizon, fear not -- your own version is on the way. We'll admit, if you had asked us a few months back what American carrier would get HTC's highest-end Android phone to date, Sprint wouldn't have been our first guess -- but hey, good for them. If you can't win the coverage battle against the Big Red juggernaut, may as well try to win the exclusive hardware battle, right?
We've got to give the divested markets representing the hollow husk of what was once Alltel a lot of credit -- they seem to be doing everything in their power to continue rocking. For proof of that, look no further than this -- pretty solid evidence that there's an Alltel-branded Tour coming down the pike. Assuming they can keep the price within reason, it'd make for a truly epic purchase on these fancy new one-year contracts they've moved to, would it not?
Filed under: Handsets, RIM, Alltel, GSM, EDGE, EV-DO, HSDPA, UMTS, CDMA, BlackBerry OS

BlackBerry Tour emerges in Alltel livery for those non-Sprint, non-Verizon types originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 30 Jun 2009 17:28:00 EST. Ready to take advantage of that new one-year contract offer from Alltel? If you are -- and you're lucky enough to live in one of the markets the carrier still serves in the wake of Verizon's acquisition -- you might want to take a good, hard look at the just-announced LG Tritan, a slide-out QWERTY set with decent specs and a killer price. For $79.99 on contract after rebate, you're getting a 3 megapixel cam, touchscreen, EV-DO Rev. A, GPS, a "full" browser (which we're hoping means HTML), and a tricky right-aligned d-pad that may or may not be awesome in practice. Too bad it's only available in 91 market areas, eh?

[Via Phone Scoop]
Filed under: Handsets, LG, Alltel, EV-DO, CDMA

LG Tritan brings QWERTY, touch, and trademarkable misspellings to Alltel originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 11 Jun 2009 11:59:00 EST. Starting tomorrow, the 91 markets of Alltel that Verizon is required to divest are now offering one-year contracts for all new and renewing customers, but there's no increase in phone pricing -- you'll pay exactly the same amount at the register as if you were signing a two-year deal. The move almost seems like a little "screw you" to whomever ends up acquiring the markets, since those companies will effectively have to deal with the lost revenue -- but on the record, anyhow, the divested trust's main sales guy says that they're "excited about the possibility of joining AT&T." We're not so sure that AT&T feels the same way, but in the meantime, this is a nice little win for customers.

Alltel steps down to one-year contracts without changing phone prices originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 04 Jun 2009 10:22:00 EST. Not that it wasn't without warning, but we've now got some pretty definitive picture proof that HTC 's Touch Pro2 is set to bask in Verizon's CDMA goodness -- we guess your Sprint friends won't be having all the fun, after all. Also caught on camera here is the HTC Cedar, a CDMA version of the HTC Maple / Snap. It's got a slightly different button layout just under the screen than the Sprint version we recently saw, which itself is different from its initial unveiling. According to 474RPR, who leaked these pics, this one's bound for Alltel's network, which while we don't see any proof from the image, we could totally buy that. Of course, none of these pics give a release date of any sort, so hang tight while we all anxiously wait in unison.
We suppose you could think of AT&T and Verizon as football teams and wireless markets as high-priced players, because a few of 'em just got traded like the athletic pieces of meat that they are. It's no secret that Verizon had to offload some markets to satisfy government requirements following its Alltel buy, and AT&T has now agreed in principle to pick up about 1.5 million subscribers' worth of spectrum and equipment in 79 market areas -- mostly rural -- for some $2.35 billion in cash. In the other direction, Verizon will be cutting AT&T a check for $240 million in exchange for about 120,000 subs in five legacy Centennial markets -- contingent, of course, on the successful completion of AT&T's purchase of Centennial. Interesting moves, but it'll be even more interesting to see which move leads its team to the playoffs... er, you know what we mean.
It was just a matter of time before Alltel locations in Verizon markets started winding down and integrating with their new corporate parents, and now, that's finally started to happen. PhoneDog noticed that some markets are already shuttering Alltel stores and moving the carrier's goods to a back wall of the closest Verizon outlet, apparently in an effort to "welcome Alltel customers and get them accustomed to the Verizon culture." Out with the blue, in with the red, as they say -- and if we had to guess, it's just a matter of time before those walls disappear altogether. Sorry, Chad.

Alltel caught crashing at Verizon's place originally appeared on Engadget on Sun, 03 May 2009 22:40:00 EST. In order to get the FCC to agree to Verizon's massive acquisition of Alltel -- the US' 5th-largest carrier -- it had to agree to some pretty serious concessions, including divestitures in a whole slew of markets to ensure that the competitive spirit remained intact. The "transaction" (as Verizon calls it) closed on January 9, and the resulting mega-carrier was given until May 9 -- a week from Saturday -- to finish spinning off the required markets. Well, as we all know, companies this large aren't known for their agility, and sure enough, Verizon is asking for just a little more time to dot its i's and cross its t's. A "Request for Extension of Management Period" has been filed with the FCC on behalf of the companies asking for another 60 days, which means the divested markets would be up and running outside of Verizon's control by July 8 of this year. Verizon blames "the sheer size and complexity of the divestitures coupled with the current economic conditions" for the request, but seriously, can't they just throw this all up on eBay for, say, a 5- or 7-day auction and be done with it? No? Here we thought that Verizon was going to ace out the US CDMA market by announcing the 8230 first, but alas, it ends up being Alltel -- the divested chunks of it post-acquisition -- that becomes the first American carrier to trumpet the device. Unlike its GSM sibling over on T-Mobile, the 8230 is a 3G handset equipped with EV-DO, but otherwise, it looks pretty much the same with a QVGA primary display, love-it-or-hate-it SureType keypad, and 2 megapixel cam. It'll hit the "new" Alltel's 2.2 million subscribers in 91 markets come early May for a seemingly reasonable $79.99.
Filed under: Handsets, RIM, Alltel, EV-DO

Alltel pulls BlackBerry Pearl 8230 into the fold, $79.99 in early May originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 23 Apr 2009 11:54:00 EST. At first glance you might be tempted to give Motorola's newest slider a pass, but we had a chance to check it out at CTIA a couple weeks back, and it's actually one helluva phone. The QA4 Evoke combines a numeric slider keypad with a full touchscreen in a vaguely PEBL-like package, offering EV-DO, a 2 megapixel cam, AGPS, A2DP, and naturally, microSD expansion -- and now, it can be yours on Alltel for $99.99 on contract. Of course, not everyone lives in an Alltel service area, so let's hope someone else has the foresight to pick it up, yeah?

[Thanks, Ben]
Filed under: Handsets, Motorola, EV-DO, CDMA

Motorola QA4 Evoke goes on sale at Alltel originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 16 Apr 2009 14:59:00 EST. We'd already known it was coming, but Alltel has now dropped full details on the VE465 flip from Motorola. The relatively low end handset features a 1.3 megapixel cam, microSD slot supporting up to 4GB of data, stereo Bluetooth, and -- in support of that media capability -- an interesting "call" / "media" mode-switching capability that changes the keypad lighting depending on what you're trying to do (you can kinda think of it as ModeShift "lite"). This sucker's available right now for $50 on contract after an instant rebate.
Filed under: Handsets, Motorola, Alltel, EV-DO, CDMA

Alltel gets official with Motorola VE465 originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 30 Mar 2009 10:59:00 EST. We all know by now that the Banter is essentially a Rumor 2 clone for Alltel, which immediately makes it a desirable device to a whole battalion of folks looking for a cheap, relatively stylish way to get their text on. Just how cheap are we talking? Try $19.99 on contract after rebate, which by our rough calculations works out to a full $30 less than what Sprint is asking at the moment. Indirectly, you could call this a slap in the face to Sprint by sworn rival Verizon -- but then again, Alltel's launching this, not Big Red proper. How long until those two lovebirds merge their product lines?
Filed under: Handsets, LG, Alltel, CDMA

LG Banter gets priced on Alltel originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 23 Mar 2009 21:14:00 EST. In this world, there are phones, and then there are phones. The VE465 from Motorola is definitely in the former, non-italicized category, but that's fine -- there's a place for all handsets in our heart. There's apparently also a place for this thing in Alltel's heart, because a product page has now sprung up over on the carrier's site pimping the unreleased phone's specs and chocolatey goodness. Alright, it's really not all that chocolatey, but hey, at least it's got EV-DO, a 1.3 megapixel cam, and compatibility with Alltel's Celltop service -- and if we had to guess, it'll probably go for a song on contract when it finally launches. We'll keep an eye on this one.
Turns out Sprint's not the only carrier launching a low-cost texter from LG this week. In fact, it's archrival Verizon that's getting in the game, too -- sorta -- by proxy, anyway, through the boys and girls at Alltel. The Banter becomes yet another in a long line of questionably-named models (think Rant, Propel, Behold... we could go on for a while here), but once you get past the name, you find that you've got a solid low-end landscape QWERTY slider with a 1.3 megapixel cam, microSD slot, Bluetooth, and changeable front and backplates. Sounds like a dead ringer for the Rumor 2, doesn't it? The Banter should be in stores now; we don't have pricing info handy, but we're thinking it's going to be mighty cheap on contract.
Listen up: you're now lined up to get some of the cheapest laptop EV-DO in the business. The Verizon division (still feels weird to say that, doesn't it?) has announced today that wireless data can be yours for a mere $40 a month -- $20 less than usual -- when added as a second line as part of a Smart Choice Pack with a voice line. That gives you EV-DO Rev. A and your choice of three cards; sadly, none of those cards are ExpressCards, but hey, for $40 3.1Mbps internet, we're more than willing to cut some corners and let a USB dongle hang off the sides of our laptops. For the record, Cricket is still a smidge cheaper at $35, but this is the first time a national (well, pseudo-national) carrier has dipped this low. Makes you wonder whether the parent company is going to partake, doesn't it?

Alltel announces $40 laptop data add-on originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 10 Mar 2009 11:21:00 EST. It was bound to happen, and now it is. Slowly, but most certainly. As the Verizatel mishmash gels more solidly into place, Verizon Wireless is making some changes when it comes to prices and features. We already heard about its tweaks to the Test Drive and NE2 programs, and now a few leaked slides are detailing imminent changes in the prepaid pricing structure. While there are far too many details to cover in this space, we will say that there are four new categories from which to choose: Prepaid Unlimited Talk, Prepaid Plus, Prepaid Core and Prepaid Basic, All four are broken down in good fashion right there in the read link, so you might as well check it out now before Big Red shoves it at you when you least expect it.
Filed under: Messaging, Alltel, Verizon Wireless, Misc

Verizon prepaid pricing changes coming February 11th originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 10 Feb 2009 20:09:00 EST. The biggest of those, by far, is AT&T, which is apparently looking to pick up as big a chunk of the assets as it is able to and, according to The Wall Street Journal, it's in a good position to do just that. Other interested parties reportedly include a joint bid from the Carlyle Group and Kohlberg Kravis & Roberts & Co, a separate bid from Providence Equity Partners LLC, and at least one unnamed cable provider. Any of those bids, however, would still be subject to approval by the Department of Justice, with AT&T sure to draw the most scrutiny of the lot.

[Via The Wall Street Journal]

AT&T reportedly eyeing post-merger Verizon Wireless assets originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 04 Feb 2009 13:32:00 EST.
Look ma, users at XDA-Developers are up to shenanigans again, and this time NFSFAN has posted up a new version of his Windows Mobile 6.1 ROM with some of HTC Touch Cruise's (Iolite) magic in it. The list of goodies added -- this is still Beta -- is long, but high on the list are Footprints, HTC's geotagging app, and some TouchFlo2D. So if you're an HTC Vogue user on Sprint, Alltel, Verizon, Bell, or Telus, get to it (but make sure to stay safe by reading, reading, and reading!) and do let us know how it turns out for you.

[Via wmpoweruser]

That alone isn't terribly awesome, but more importantly, Alltel numbers are now included as in-network calls for Verizon customers. Alltel customers, meanwhile, have to wait for the merger to complete. Sorry, folks!

And here's a little something for the data fiends: the venerable BroadbandAccess laptop plan becomes Verizon Wireless Mobile Broadband (there's a mouthful for you) this coming Monday. That's an incredible upgrade from four to ten syllables, so we should all be thanking our lucky stars for that.

Verizon changing some plan names, gets Alltel in-network calling originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 17 Jan 2009 17:01:00 EST.
