Own one and you can globetrot, or else keep separate home and work lines without the bulk of an extra device in the pocket. Sony is gambling that enough Americans have that multi-line desire by selling the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/07/10/sony-xperia-miro-and-xperia-tipo-hands-on-video/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Xperia tipo dual</a> and its regular, single-SIM counterpart in the US as unlocked GSM models. Neither of the Android 4.0 phones is what we'd call a powerhouse with the same 3.5-inch screen, 3.2-megapixel camera and 800MHz Snapdragon inside, but both can latch on to HSPA 3G on AT&amp;T, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/t-mobile,refarming?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">refarmed T-Mobile coverage</a> and 2100MHz carriers abroad, even if the single-SIM tipo curiously has 900MHz 3G support that the tipo dual lacks. It's undoubtedly price that Sony is counting on more than anything: at respective contract-free prices of $180 and $190 for the tipo and tipo dual, the pair of Xperias may be sold most often as travel-only phones for the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/ifa2012?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">jet set</a>.</p>

Just a few weeks after it brought the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/05/30/sony-announces-xperia-go-and-xperia-acro-s-waterproof-and-dual/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Xperia Go</a> into the world, it's passing the toughened-up phone through the FCC for Uncle Sam's rubber stamp. Before you get visions of picking one up for Facebook updates on a canoe trip, be aware that it's the international version we're looking at: it can run on GSM and EDGE with US carriers, but the 900MHz and 2,100MHz HSPA bands are meant for 3G in other corners of the world. All the same, it does put the phone on the fast track to its scheduled international release in the summer. There's always importing if you've just got to have some weather-hardened Android 2.3 for a California vacation.</p>

That's to say that a diminished form factor often doesn't bring the "best things" with it. For example, Sony's NXT family members, revealed between <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/09/sony-xperia-arc-s-hands-on/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">CES</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/02/29/sonys-2012-xperia-series-gets-together-for-awkward-family-portr/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">MWC</a>, gifted consumers with the choice of three new handsets: the Xperia P, S and U. The last one in that list is by far the smallest, and in congruence with the general trend of mobile technology, the most lightly armored.</p><p> However, we're not ones to make assumptions, and heaven forbid we pre-judge something based on size alone. We're as willing to be surprised as anyone, and the new baby of the Sony bunch is as likely a candidate as any to throw us a curveball. Our <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/02/26/sony-xperia-u-hands-on/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">initial impressions</a> in Barcelona were largely positive, so this review -- as the firm says on its marketing material for the phone -- is all about (the Xperia) U.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-xperia-u-review/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Sony Xperia U review</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-xperia-u-review/5061436?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/06/jtmg4525800_thumbnail.jpg" alt="Sony Xperia U review" title="Sony Xperia U review" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-xperia-u-review/5061437?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/06/jtmg4522800_thumbnail.jpg" alt="Sony Xperia U review" title="Sony Xperia U review" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-xperia-u-review/5061438?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/06/jtmg4521800_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-xperia-u-review/5061439?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/06/jtmg4520800_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-xperia-u-review/5061440?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/06/jtmg4519800_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div></p>

The Xperia S UI, on the other hand, has been a bit of an elusive beast. That is, until now -- the tech world's very own out-of-focus paparazzi caught a look at the handset's upcoming UI, revealing a slightly blurry view of the Xperia S<a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/xperia+s/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><span style="display: none;"> </span></a>' finer details. Sure, that <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/XperiaX8/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Xperia X8</a> in the picture may look demure, but the FCC doesn't mess around -- mere seconds after we found this shot of the 3-inch, Android 1.6 handset, we stumbled across a PDF showing the phone in -- ahem -- various states of dress. Now, we try to run a clean site here, so you'll have to hit our source link to find those salacious pics (and manual) yourself, but if you want some nice, <em>tasteful</em> shots of the device's exterior and ports you'll find them immediately below. No new specs here, by the way -- it's the same quad-band GSM HSPA handset with WiFi, Bluetooth 2.0, A-GPS and FM radio <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/16/sony-ericssons-3-inch-xperia-x8-made-official-coming-in-q3-201/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">we've seen before</a>. <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-ericsson-xperia-x8-hits-the-fcc/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Sony Ericsson Xperia X8 hits the FCC</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-ericsson-xperia-x8-hits-the-fcc/3294210?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/08/8-24-10-x10800006_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-ericsson-xperia-x8-hits-the-fcc/3294207?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/08/8-24-10-x10800003_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-ericsson-xperia-x8-hits-the-fcc/3294208?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/08/8-24-10-x10800004_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-ericsson-xperia-x8-hits-the-fcc/3294206?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/08/8-24-10-x10800002_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-ericsson-xperia-x8-hits-the-fcc/3294209?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/08/8-24-10-x10800005_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div>

In a smartphone market saturated with 3.5-inch and larger displays, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Sony+Ericsson?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Sony Ericsson</a> reckons there's still a little place for petite packages. Enter the Xperia <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/x10+mini?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">X10 Mini</a> (E10i) and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/x10+mini+pro?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Mini Pro</a> (U20i) -- both direct descendants of the beastly <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/sony+ericsson%2Cx10?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">X10</a> Android 1.6 handset. Apart from the Pro's slide-out keyboard, removable battery, and positioning of various features, the two Minis are otherwise internally identical -- same processor, same camera, and same screen. So can these cute baby form factors offer more than just some palm-cuddling time? Can we get a decent smartphone performance out of them? Follow us after the break to find out.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-ericsson-xperia-x10-mini-mini-pro-review/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Mini / Mini Pro review</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-ericsson-xperia-x10-mini-mini-pro-review/3144744?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/07/sex10mini2010-07-05-0_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-ericsson-xperia-x10-mini-mini-pro-review/3144745?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/07/sex10mini2010-07-05-1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-ericsson-xperia-x10-mini-mini-pro-review/3144746?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/07/sex10mini2010-07-05-2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-ericsson-xperia-x10-mini-mini-pro-review/3144747?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/07/sex10mini2010-07-05-3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-ericsson-xperia-x10-mini-mini-pro-review/3144748?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/07/sex10mini2010-07-05-4_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div>

While the real Shakira may be busy gallivanting over in South Africa, Sony Ericsson's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/07/sony-ericsson-shakira-is-a-lower-cost-x10-alternative/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">handset that bore the same (code)name</a> has today been unveiled as the latest member of the Xperia line. Bridging the gap between the fully formed <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/22/sony-ericsson-xperia-x10-review/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">X10</a> and its <a href="http://www.engadget.com/all/x10mini?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Mini</a> siblings, the 3-inch <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/14/sony-ericsson-shakira-to-be-called-the-xperia-x8/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Xperia X8</a> will run Android 1.6 somewhere deep underneath a comprehensively customized skin. That means you get Sony Ericsson's social (Timescape) and media (Mediascape) aggregators whether you like them or not, and by the looks of the early hands-on pictures, it seems like a straight port of the UI available on the X10 Mini. A 3.2 megapixel camera is available around back, with WiFi, a 600MHz CPU, 1,200mAh battery, and interchangeable covers completing the value proposition. The X8 will cost around &euro;259 ($318) when it launches in the third quarter of this year. Hit the sources for more pictures.

<div style="text-align: center;"><img vspace="4" hspace="4" border="1" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/03/se-x10-review-26-sm.jpg" alt="" /></div>
Of the world's largest phone manufacturers, perhaps none has taken a more twisted road to smartphone ubiquity than Sony Ericsson. It began its journey back in the pre-joint venture Ericsson days by throwing its weight behind <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Symbian/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Symbian</a>, a smartphone platform that would ultimately become the world's most popular -- but it made a fatal error in supporting the doomed <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/UIQ/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">UIQ</a> flavor that never saw even a fraction of the support its <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/S60/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">S60</a> cousin did. UIQ's untimely (but predicted) collapse last year left the company nearly rudderless and ill-equipped to deal with competitors like Nokia, HTC, and Apple, all of whom had long since embraced other platforms -- all with fighting chances of market dominance.<br />
<br />
Left without a platform to champion, Sony Ericsson would ultimately continue supporting Symbian through its involvement with the Symbian Foundation and phones like the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Satio/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Satio</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Vivaz/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Vivaz</a>... <em>and</em> it would ramp up support for Windows Mobile with the Xperia <a href="http://mobile.engadget.com/tag/x1,sonyericsson?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">X1</a> and <a href="http://mobile.engadget.com/tag/x2,sonyericsson?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">X2</a>... <em>and</em> it would bring Android into the fold with the <a href="http://mobile.engadget.com/tag/x10,sonyericsson?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">X10</a>, all within a few months of each other. All told, Sony Ericsson enters 2010 actively supporting three unrelated smartphone platforms, and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/02/14/live-from-sony-ericssons-mwc-2010-press-conference/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">comments by CEO Bert Norberg</a> at MWC in February lead us to believe that they'd be happy to take on a fourth (or more) if the opportunity presented itself. It's an odd strategy to be sure, particularly for a company that's struggling mightily and shrinking its workforce more than any other top-five manufacturer. How it intends to effectively compete on three different fronts without spreading itself hopelessly thin, well... that remains a huge question mark.<br />
<br />
That said, the Xperia X10 is perhaps the most promising of Sony Ericsson's confusing crop of modern smartphones, combining attractive hardware with killer specs, Android, and an intriguing custom skin. Does it hold its own against modern competitors like HTC's Nexus One and Desire? And more importantly, can it keep Sony Ericsson from going over the brink? Read on to find out.<br />
<br />
<strong>Note: </strong>Sony Ericsson contacted us shortly after the review was published to let us know that this particular X10 is running pre-production firmware, which may account for some of the issues we had with keyboard performance and occasional sluggishness. Let's hope!<br />

The first Android device from Sony Ericsson may have undergone an upgrade in the naming department, jumping from <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/xperiax3?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">X3</a> all the way to XPERIA X10 (probably to avoid confusion with <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/09/02/nokias-x6-follows-the-5800s-footsteps-while-the-x3-brings-ov/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Nokia's X3</a> handset), but what lies under the hood is reassuringly <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/07/21/sony-ericssons-android-powered-xperia-x3-sorta-confirmed-by-way/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">in line</a> with <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/07/04/sony-ericsson-rachael-android-xperia-handset-unveiled/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">what we've been hearing</a>. That is to say, a 1GHz <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Snapdragon/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Snapdragon</a> chip from Qualcomm, wide 4-inch capacitive touch display, 8.1 megapixel camera with LED flash, and a thoroughly tricked out Android skin named Rachael. Sony Ericsson stressed to us the symbiotic importance of both the new flagship device and "open OS" UI -- they see the X10 as the patriarch of a whole new family of handsets, which we can expect to see in the first half of 2010, all sporting the beauty of Rachael and perhaps helping to bridge the gap between featurephones and, well, more advanced featurephones. So don't be shy, come along to Engadget Classic to see our full and uncensored first impressions of both, along with hands-on video and pictures.

So don't be shy, come along past the break to see our uncensored first impressions of both, along with hands-on video and pictures.<br />
